You can’t predict the future. You can only surf the waves as they come until you reach the beach.
I was just reflecting on how the markets shift so rapidly. Most of the times, you think it would be a major disruptive competitor. But it can be just a random sequence of events. This time it was a tiny microscopic virus that changed entire markets.
We’re so focused on the obvious competitors that we were not expecting a random virus that will have a so much bigger impact. And it’s not just natural disasters. Terrorist attacks can destroy entire economies.
The once giant Nokia was devastated when a computer company launched a smartphone that everyone thought it would be a fad.
An entire trillion-dollar auto industry was disrupted by an entrepreneur launching an electric car.
That’s why I like to see the future as a surfer preparing for the waves. We don’t know what it’s coming, but we sure need to ride it as best as we can until we reach the beach.
How about you? Are you prepared for the next wave?
